- Pressure-test the cooler before reusing anything from the old unit — an internal leak mixes oil and water and damages the engine
- Renew the seals and gaskets at every joint disturbed and check the raw water side for scale or debris
- Change the oil and filter after fitting if the old cooler had been passing water
