  • Squared ends no longer sitting flat on the seat washer
  • Corrosion pitting on the wire, which starts a fatigue crack

  • Replace valve springs as a complete set — one soft spring in an old set will fail again quickly
  • Check the retainer, lock plate and seat washer for wear at the same time
  • Measure free length and squareness against a new spring rather than judging by eye
