Holds the valve stem square to its seat as the valve opens and closes, and carries heat away from the stem into the head.

  • Puff of blue smoke on start-up or on the overrun
  • Oil consumption climbing with no external leak
  • Ticking or tapping from the valve gear
  • Valve stem rocking in the guide when checked with a lever
  • Oil-wetted or coked inlet tract behind the valve

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Guides are an interference fit and normally need pressing and reaming to size, which is machine shop work
  • Renew the valve stem seals and check the valves and seats at the same time, then recut or lap the seats after new guides are fitted
