🔌 Function

Sprays a jet of engine oil at the underside of the piston to carry heat away from the crown.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Piston crown found scuffed, burnt or with the skirt seized
  • Oil pressure slightly low if a jet has broken away
  • Metallic tapping if the jet has bent into the piston path
  • Jet found blocked with carbon or sludge on strip-down
  • Jet body found cracked at its mounting

🛠️ Service Notes

  • A blocked or bent jet will burn a piston, so check the jets are clear and correctly aimed whenever the sump is off
  • Do not bend a jet to clear an obstruction; renew it and check the alignment with the piston at bottom dead centre
