🔌 Function

Follows the camshaft profile and transfers that motion to the pushrod, converting cam lift into valve gear movement.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Ticking or tapping from the valve gear that does not clear when warm
  • Valve clearances drifting out between checks
  • Rough running on one cylinder as lift is lost
  • Tappet face found pitted, cupped or with the hardening broken through
  • Tappet body worn in its bore, giving side play, with matching wear on the cam lobe

🛠️ Service Notes

  • If a tappet face has broken up, inspect the matching cam lobe and change the oil and filter, since the debris will have circulated
  • Renew tappets as a set where several are marked and reset the valve clearances after fitting
