  • Play or a knock felt at the helm when the wheel is rocked
  • Nut found finger-loose or backed off on inspection
  • Thread stretched, galled or damaged
  • Locking feature no longer gripping, so the nut turns freely by hand
  • Bright fretting where the joint has been able to move

  • This is a steering system fastener - never reuse a self-locking nut that no longer resists turning, and check the whole linkage for play before signing the boat off
  • Torque to the figure in the manual for your steering installation and refit any split pin or locking device
