🔧 Product Description
Genuine BRP Evinrude Johnson 12-Volt Starter Solenoid - Part Number: 0586180
A genuine BRP isolated-base starter solenoid for a broad range of electric-start Evinrude, Johnson and OMC marine engines.
Part number 586180 is the commonly used shortened form of full OEM number 0586180.
The solenoid acts as a high-current electrical switch. When the ignition key or start button energises its control circuit, the solenoid connects battery power to the starter motor.

🚤 Compatibility
Commonly used on selected carburetted Evinrude and Johnson outboards from approximately 1976-2005.
Representative applications include:
• Twin-cylinder 20HP-60HP engines
• Three-cylinder 60HP-75HP engines
• V4 85HP-140HP engines
• V6 150HP-250HP engines
• V8 250HP-300HP engines
• Selected OMC sterndrive starter circuits
• Electric-start engines using a 12-volt isolated-base solenoid
Important fitment note:
• Application is controlled by terminal arrangement, mounting bracket and electrical grounding design.
• Some 9.9HP and 15HP engines use different solenoids, including 0584128 or 0584580.
• Do not substitute a grounded-base solenoid for an isolated-base unit.
• Confirm the battery-cable stud size, control-terminal position and mounting-hole spacing.
🔌 Function
A low-current signal from the ignition switch energises an internal electromagnetic coil.
The solenoid then closes its heavy internal contacts, allowing high battery current to flow to the starter motor without passing through the ignition switch.
Common signs of solenoid failure:
• Starter does not operate when the key is turned
• Solenoid clicks but the starter does not crank
• No click despite a valid start signal
• Starter operates intermittently
• Starter continues running after the key is released
• Burnt or heavily corroded terminals
• Excessive voltage drop across the large studs
• Solenoid becomes unusually hot
• Internal contacts weld together
• Cracked housing or loose terminal studs
Recommended checks before installation:
• Confirm battery condition and cable connections
• Test for voltage at the control terminal while cranking
• Measure voltage drop across the solenoid contacts
• Check the neutral-safety switch and ignition switch
• Clean battery, starter and ground connections
• Transfer cables one at a time to avoid incorrect connection
• Hold the terminal studs while tightening cable nuts
• Do not allow the studs to rotate inside the housing
• Apply corrosion protection after final electrical testing
📦 Condition
• Genuine BRP Evinrude Johnson OEM part
• Brand new
• Terminal nuts and washers are included according to OEM packaging
• Supplied in genuine or equivalent protective packaging
