The anode corrodes in place of the aluminium gearcase and mounting components. Its fin can also be adjusted to reduce steering pull caused by propeller torque.

Common signs of failure:

• Anode has lost approximately half of its original mass

• Surface is deeply pitted or heavily eroded

• Gearcase corrosion appears around the mounting area

• Anode has been painted or coated

• Steering pull changes after the trim tab is moved or damaged
