Genuine Volvo Penta sacrificial zinc nut anode that screws onto the propeller shaft nut, listed for 40 mm and 45 mm shafts with a 1 inch Whitworth thread. From the Marine Propulsion group, it weighs 0.535 kg and is listed for 190 applications across MD, MB, TMD, AQ, AD and AQAD series engines. Seven shaft nut anodes are listed together and they split by thread as well as by shaft size: this one, 833913 and 833915 carry Whitworth threads, while 873411, 873412, 873413 and 873415 carry M16 to M30 metric threads. Match both the shaft diameter and the thread or the anode will not fit.

🔌 Function

Corrodes sacrificially in place of the shaft, propeller and stern gear, giving the surrounding metal galvanic protection.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Anode wasted to well under half its original size
• Anode still full and bright after a season, meaning it is not bonded and not working
• Pink or eroded patches appearing on the propeller or shaft
• Anode loose, or spinning on its thread
• White scale crust that insulates the anode from the metal it should protect

🛠️ Service Notes

• Volvo Penta now recommends aluminium anodes for salt and brackish water rather than the zinc it used to specify, and is gradually phasing most zinc anodes out, so check what is currently listed for your shaft before reordering zinc
• Fit onto clean bare metal, since good contact between the anode and the surface it protects is what makes it work - never paint it
• For a 45 mm shaft on a metric M30 nut the anode is 873415 instead, so check the thread as well as the shaft size
• Match the thread as well as the shaft diameter - the range mixes imperial and metric threads
