- Coolant or seawater weeping at either end of the connector
- Corrosion pitting on the wetted surfaces
- Bore choked with scale, cutting flow
- Sealing faces no longer flat
- Threads or studs wasted where they pass into the water space

- Renew the seals or gaskets at both ends and check the faces for flatness before assembly
- Look for scale inside the connector; a partly blocked one causes overheating that is easily blamed on the pump
