🔌 Function

Transmits drive through the power take-off, meshing with its partner gear to carry torque to the driven equipment.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Whine or growl from the take-off that changes with speed
  • Rattle or clatter under changing load
  • Teeth found chipped, pitted or worn to a point
  • Metal debris or bright flakes in the oil
  • Excessive backlash felt when the gear is rocked by hand

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Inspect the mating gear and the bearings at the same time - a damaged gear rarely fails alone
  • Check backlash and end float on assembly before closing the housing up
  • Change the oil and clean the housing so old debris does not go back in with the new gear
