🔌 Function
Seals the cylinder head to the block, containing combustion pressure in each bore and keeping the coolant and oil passages separate from the cylinders.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- White steam from the exhaust that will not clear once the engine is warm
- Creamy emulsion on the dipstick or under the oil filler cap
- Header tank bubbling, pressurising or pushing coolant out
- Overheating that comes on quickly under load
- Adjacent cylinders both low on a compression test

- Have the head skimmed or checked for flatness and cracks before refitting
- Follow the tightening sequence and torque or angle figures in your engine's manual, and renew stretch-type head bolts
- Correct whatever overheated the engine first, or the new gasket will go the same way
