🔌 Function

Turns the engine over for starting, throwing its pinion into the flywheel ring gear and driving it until the engine fires and runs away from it.

  • Nothing but a single heavy click at the key
  • Starter turning the engine slowly on a fully charged battery
  • Grinding as the pinion engages, or the motor spinning without engaging
  • Smell of hot insulation, or smoke from the starter after a long crank
  • Starter staying engaged and running on after the key is released

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check the battery, the main earth strap and the heavy cable terminations before condemning a starter — a poor connection gives exactly the same symptoms
  • Inspect the flywheel ring gear 859720 before fitting, and renew the pinion 859623 or repair kit 859620 if only the drive end is at fault
  • Isolate the battery before disconnecting the heavy starter cable
