• Oil weeping from the housing joint or from around the filter seat
• Sealing face scored, corroded or distorted so the filter seal will not bed
• Housing cracked at a fixing boss or at a section change
• Threads for the filter or the centre bolt damaged or pulled
• Oil pressure low or slow to come up after an oil change

• Clean the sealing face and lightly oil the new filter seal before fitting; most housing leaks are a seal that was fitted dry or onto a dirty face
• Check the mating faces are flat when refitting - a distorted housing will not seal even with a new gasket
