🔌 Function

Generates the hydraulic pressure and flow that the power steering needs, driven from the engine and delivering assistance to the steering ram or gear.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Steering heavy, or assistance dropping away at low engine speed
• Whine or groan from the pump that rises with steering effort
• Fluid weeping from the pump shaft seal or the body joint
• Fluid found aerated, foamy or discoloured in the reservoir
• Assistance uneven from lock to lock, or a judder felt through the helm

🛠️ Service Notes

• Check the fluid level, the drive belt tension and the hoses for a suction-side air leak before condemning the pump - all three produce the same symptoms
• Flush the system if the old pump has broken up; debris carried over will destroy the replacement
• Steering is safety-related - do not put a vessel to sea with steering assistance that is failing intermittently
