• Take care in aluminium and light-alloy housings — the thread in the casting is weaker than the nipple, so tighten to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine rather than going by feel
• Check that the bore is clear before fitting; these are small-bore fittings and are easily blocked by scale, sealant or debris
• Hold the nipple with a spanner while tightening or slackening the hose union on it, so the load is not carried by the casting
• Support the hose so it leaves the nipple without side load or a tight bend, and re-check the joint for weeping after the engine has been run and allowed to cool
