Closes the top of the cylinder, carries the valve gear and forms the combustion chamber against the piston.

  • Coolant loss with no external leak, or bubbles in the header tank
  • White smoke from the exhaust and mayonnaise under the oil filler
  • Loss of compression on one cylinder
  • Cracking found between the valve seats on strip-down
  • Head face distorted or eaten away around the gasket line

  • Have the head face checked for flatness and cracks before it goes back on
  • Fit a new head gasket, 861865, and follow the tightening sequence and stages for the engine
  • Find out what caused the original failure, as an overheat that warps one head will warp the next
