Gives the valve a hard, replaceable face to close against, sealing the combustion chamber and carrying heat out of the valve head.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Compression lost on one cylinder with a hard start when cold
  • Seat pitted, burnt or recessed into the head
  • Valve sinking, so the clearances keep closing up
  • Seat found loose or moved in its recess

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Fitting a seat insert is machine-shop work: the recess has to be cut true and the seat cut to the correct angle and width afterwards
  • Renew the valve at the same time, as an old valve will not bed properly on a freshly cut seat
