- Terminal screws that will no longer clamp a wire tight
- Green or white corrosion on the terminals and wire tails
- Scorch marks or melted plastic around one pole
- Body cracked so a terminal can turn in its pocket

- Label the wires before removing the old block, since the order is rarely obvious once the leads are off
- Cut back and re-terminate any corroded wire tail rather than reusing it - cleaning the block alone will not cure a green conductor
