- Witness marks or rub damage where the fan tips have caught the ring
- Ring loose on its mountings and moving with vibration
- Corrosion eating the ring away where it meets the radiator

- Check the fan tip clearance right around the ring after fitting - a ring pulled up out of true will be struck by the fan
- Inspect the fan and its mountings at the same time, since rub marks mean something has been moving
