🔌 Function

Returns oil by gravity from a component back to the sump, keeping the drain path clear so the component does not fill and flood its seals.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Oil weeping or dripping at either end connection
  • Oil pushed past a component's seals because the return is blocked
  • Blue smoke where oil has backed up into the charge or exhaust side
  • Pipe internally coked, silted or restricted
  • Flange or union face distorted so a new seal will not pull up tight

  • Check the pipe is clear through before refitting, as a coked return line is a common cause of oil being pushed past seals elsewhere
  • Renew the gaskets and sealing rings at both ends rather than reusing them
