🔌 Function

Takes up thermal expansion and movement between two sections of the exhaust run, so the pipework is not stressed as it heats and cools.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Exhaust gas or soot escaping at the compensator
• Bellows section split, torn or blown out
• Noticeably louder exhaust and a smell of fumes in the compartment
• Cracks in the pipework either side, from movement the compensator is no longer absorbing
• Bellows crushed, over-extended or distorted out of line

• Check the engine is not an IMO 3 unit before ordering
• Inspect the exhaust supports and hangers — a compensator that has torn usually did so because the pipe run was allowed to move or sag
• Renew the flange gaskets and fasteners at both ends
