Type A is an earlier aluminium Duoprop range for the classic Volvo Penta 280, 290 and DP Aquamatic sterndrives. Volvo Penta has replaced the Type A propeller sets with Type J sets, although complete sets are still listed in the A0 and A1 dimensions and the Type A front and rear propellers are sold individually as spare parts. This is the A0 front propeller; the matching rear propeller is 872264, and the pair is also listed as set 872270. Every set of Duoprop propellers is designed, tested and manufactured together, so the front and rear propellers of a dimension belong to each other.

🔌 Function

The leading propeller of a counter-rotating Duoprop pair, taking the first bite of clean water and turning engine torque into thrust, with the rear propeller behind it sharing the load the drive is designed to carry.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Vibration through the hull that changes with engine speed
• Blade edges chipped, bent, curled or eroded
• Loss of top speed, or the engine running past its normal maximum
• Line or weed wound in behind the blades
• Hub slipping under load so the drive turns without producing thrust

🛠️ Service Notes

• Order by the A0 code marked on the propeller rather than by weight: only 22 grams separate it from the A1 front 854774
• Order set 872270 if both propellers are due, rather than the two singles
• Do not mix Type A, Type B and Type J propellers on a drive, and use propellers of the same type and size on the drive - or on both drives in a twin installation; Type J is the modern aluminium replacement covering both Type A and Type B sizes, but the sizes do not transfer directly - an A5 is not a J5 - so size an upgrade with your dealer, giving maximum boat speed and engine rpm
• Type J sizes are not equally transferred from Type A sizes - an A5 propeller does not correspond to a J5 propeller. Consult a Volvo Penta dealer for the right size, providing the maximum boat speed and engine rpm if possible.
• Do not mix Type A, B and J propellers. Always use propellers of the same type and size on the drive, or on both drives in twin installations.
• Installation hardware, types A, B, C and J: propeller cone kit M16 872614 or M20 872549, propeller nut 3851334, thrust rings 3858458 and 3858457. The spacer ring for the propeller cone, 853676, is only to be used with Type A propellers.
