• Renew the grommet whenever the cable, pipe or shaft it seals is disturbed; old rubber takes a set and will not seal or grip again
• Check that the hole or bore is clean, free of burrs and undamaged — a sharp edge will cut a new grommet
• Ease the grommet in with clean water or the correct rubber lubricant, not with oil, grease or fuel, unless the assembly is oil-wetted by design
• Make sure the grommet is fully home all round with the cable or pipe centred in it, so nothing is left bearing on the edge of the hole
