Houses the thermostat and carries the coolant flow between the engine, the heat exchanger and the bypass, so the engine warms up quickly and then holds temperature.

- Coolant weeping from the housing face or a corroded boss
- Engine slow to warm up, or overheating with the thermostat working
- White crusting or rust staining around the joint
- Hose stub corroded thin or a stripped or seized fixing
- Casting found pitted, cracked or eroded internally on removal

- Renew the thermostat, its seal and the joint gaskets while the housing is off
- It is a heavy casting - support it during removal so the fixings and mating faces are not strained
