Seals the joint between two components, keeping what is inside the system in and keeping water and dirt out.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Seepage, drips or a wet film at the plate joint, or oil, fuel or coolant tracking down from the flange
- Staining, crusting or a washed-clean streak at the joint face where a leak has been evaporating
- Loss of oil, coolant or pressure from the system behind the plate with no other source found
- A plate found bowed or corroded, or its gasket blown out between two bolt holes
🛠️ Service Notes
- Clean both mating faces back to dry, bare metal and check them for burrs, scoring, old gasket material and distortion before the plate goes on
- Renew the gasket, O-ring or seal that works with the plate rather than reusing it, and use only the sealant the workshop manual for your engine specifies, only where it specifies it
- Fit the plate the correct way round, with any drilling, cut-out or relief lined up with the port or passage it belongs to
- Pull the fasteners down evenly and in stages, working across the plate rather than round one side, to the torque given in the manual — a plate tightened unevenly will bow and leak
- Leak- or pressure-check the joint before returning the engine to service and recheck it after the first warm-up
