🔌 Function

Throws the starter pinion into mesh and closes the heavy-current contacts to the motor when the start signal is given.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • A single loud click with no crank when the key is turned
  • Starter cranks intermittently, or only after several attempts
  • Pinion staying engaged after the engine fires
  • Contacts burnt or pitted inside the solenoid
  • Terminals hot, discoloured or corroded

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Isolate the batteries before disconnecting the heavy leads, and check the battery, earth strap and cable condition before condemning the solenoid — a poor earth mimics a failed one exactly
  • Clean the terminals and refit the heavy leads to the correct torque so they cannot arc
