• Use a driver bit that fills the recess completely and press it in hard while turning; a worn or undersize bit is what wrecks the head on these screws
• Renew any screw whose recess is already burred, or that is corroded or seized, rather than refitting it — someone has to get it out again next time
• Clean out the threaded hole and check the thread before fitting, and take particular care in aluminium and plastic housings where the thread strips easily
• Tighten to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine where one is given; otherwise firm and even across the fixing, as these are small fasteners and are easily pulled
• Use the thread-locking or sealing treatment the manual specifies for that position, and keep the original washers in their original order
