• Weeping or dripping from the joint the ring seals
• Ring flattened, having taken a permanent set
• Rubber hardened, crazed or cracking when flexed
• Nicks or a spiral twist from being rolled in during assembly
• Ring swollen or gone soft after contact with the wrong fluid
