• Head recess rounded out so a key no longer bites
• Corrosion or salt scale packed into the socket
• Thread stripped or pulled
• Screw backing out and the joint working loose

🛠️ Service Notes

• Use a hex key or bit that fills the socket fully and is not rounded off — a sloppy tool fit is what ruins these heads
• Clean paint, sealant and dirt out of the socket before engaging the tool, and check the threads and the mating face are clean and dry
• Tighten to the figure and sequence given in the workshop manual for the assembly, rather than by feel — socket screws are often used where clamp load matters and access is poor
• Renew any screw whose socket is damaged, and refit with thread-locking compound only where the manual for that assembly calls for it
• Start every screw by hand so it picks up the thread square, particularly into aluminium housings where a cross-threaded start ruins the casting
