Locates and retains one component on another through a drilled hole, the split sleeve springing outward to grip the bore.

- Pin working out of its hole, or standing proud
- Component loose or able to rotate on its pin
- Pin sheared, leaving one half in the bore
- Hole worn oval or bellmouthed
- Corrosion seizing the pin so it will not drive out

- Fit a new pin rather than reusing the old one - driving a spring pin out collapses it and it will not grip on the second fitting
- Check the bore for wear before fitting; a hole that has gone oval will let a new pin work loose again
