Screws into the cylinder head and gives a hose spigot for the air bleed line, letting air carried in the coolant vent through to the expansion tank instead of collecting in the head.

• Coolant weeping from the head where the nipple screws in
• Air collecting in the system, with the header level swinging or the engine running hot
• Spigot corroded or the bleed passage blocked with scale
• Bleed hose perished or blown off the barb
• Thread damaged, so the nipple will not pull up tight in the head

• Check the small bleed passage is clear - a blocked ventilation nipple gives the same symptoms as a failing thermostat
• Renew the bleed hose and its clamp at the same time, and use the sealing method specified for a fitting into the head
