- Thread damaged, crossed or seized to the port
- Crusted corrosion or old oil staining around the joint

- Check the pipe end and its seat before condemning the nut, as a damaged seat will not seal however tight the nut is done up
- Clean the threads dry before refitting so the nut pulls up on the joint rather than on trapped dirt
