🔧 Product Description

Genuine Mercury Control-Cable Retainer Latch - Part Number: 98889

A genuine Mercury and Mariner latch used to retain throttle or shift cable barrels in selected outboard control-linkage and rigging assemblies.

This is an earlier and broadly used cable-retention design, distinct from later EZ Shift latch 889529. The latch snaps over the cable anchor components to prevent the cable barrel from lifting out during operation.

⚙️ Key Features

  • Genuine Mercury control-cable latch
  • Correct part number 98889
  • Retains throttle or shift cable barrels
  • Used across numerous two-stroke rigging systems
  • Also appears in selected four-stroke remote-control attachment kits
  • Factory snap-lock geometry

  • Additional Mercury / Mariner engines whose linkage diagram specifies 98889
  • Engine Type: Mercury / Mariner two-stroke and selected four-stroke outboard
  • Fitment Requirement: Confirm cable-anchor bracket and latch style

🔌 Function

The latch holds the control-cable barrel in the anchor bracket while the cable inner wire moves. This preserves the adjusted cable position and ensures reliable throttle and shift travel.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Cable barrel lifts out of the anchor
  • Throttle or shift adjustment changes
  • Latch is cracked or loose
  • Forward or reverse travel becomes incomplete
  • Cable anchor has excessive movement
