• Use the correct pliers or fitting tool; opening a retainer further than it needs to go, or prising it with a screwdriver, distorts it permanently
• Check the groove or landing face for wear, burrs and scoring, and dress or renew the mating part if the retainer will no longer seat squarely
• Where the retainer holds a rotating or spring-loaded part, confirm by hand that the assembly is captive and has the free movement the manual specifies before closing up
