- Band no longer closing evenly all round
- Inner face scored, burred or worn so it marks the rings
- Ratchet, screw or clamp slipping under tension
- Distortion or a step where the band overlaps
- Rings breaking on entry despite the compressor being used
🛠️ Service Notes
- Oil the rings and the inside of the compressor before entering the piston, and check the band sits flat on the block deck
- If a ring catches, stop and withdraw the piston rather than tapping harder — a broken ring in the bore means starting again
