- Jaws or hooks rounded off and slipping
- Spindle thread galled, tight or seized
- Legs or arms sprung out of line
- Cracks at a jaw root or across the yoke
- Tool pulling crooked, so the component jams in the bore

- Keep the pull square and in line with the bore; a crooked pull is what cracks the legs
- Grease the spindle thread before use so the load goes into the pull rather than into friction
